What a beginner nail technician needs: the equipment checklist

Published 2026-10-04 · Updated 2026-11-04 · Nailshop.lt

What do you need for nail extensions and gel polish as a beginner nail technician? In short: a UV/LED lamp, an e-file with several bits, a dust collector, prep liquids, base coat, gel polishes and top coat, builder gel with forms or tips, a few quality tools, and products for disinfecting and sterilising your tools. Everything else – nail art supplies, dozens of colours, a second modelling system – can be bought later, once it becomes clear which services you perform most often.

Core equipment: lamp, e-file, dust collector

UV/LED lamp

Choose a hybrid UV/LED lamp that fits the whole hand with the thumb, with diodes on the sides as well and a timer. For working with clients it is worth getting a more powerful one – not for the quality, but for the time: every minute saved adds up over a day. You will find models in the UV/LED nail lamps category.

E-file

An electric nail file (e-file) is needed for working on the cuticles, removing old product, corrections and shaping extended nails. For a beginner, what matters most is smoothly adjustable speed, a reverse function, and a comfortable handpiece that does not vibrate. For example, the "Strong 210" e-file has adjustable speed of up to 40,000 rpm, two-way rotation direction switching, and control by hand or foot pedal. How to compare models is explained in the article how to choose an e-file for nails.

Dust collector

Filing gel and acrylic produces fine dust that rises straight into the technician's breathing zone. A dust collector pulls it in right at the workstation, so it is not a luxury but a health measure. How to choose the power, filter and type – in the article dust collector for manicure.

What you need for nail extensions and polish: materials

  • For prep: dehydrator (nail cleanser), primer – an acid-free one is more convenient to start with, cleanser for the sticky layer, and lint-free wipes.
  • For gel polish: rubber base coat, a strengthening base for thin nails, a no-wipe top coat and a matt top coat, several neutral shades, a classic red, white and black.
  • For extensions: clear and camouflage builder gel, forms (templates) or top forms, tips if you plan to use them, and a gel brush. You will find builder and camouflage gels in the gel systems category.
  • For removal: gel polish remover and foil.

At the start, choose one modelling system – gel, acrylic or PolyGel – and learn it well. Materials for several systems at once mean higher costs and slower learning.

Tools: nippers, pushers, files, brushes

Choose metal tools made of stainless steel that the manufacturer allows to be disinfected and sterilised – they will have to withstand these procedures after every client.

  • Cuticle nippers – one of the most important tools. It is better to have fewer, but quality and sharpenable ones.
  • Cuticle pusher (a double-ended one is the most convenient) and a tool for cleaning under the nail.
  • Scissors for natural nails and cuticles.
  • Files – in several grits: coarser (e.g. 100/180) for artificial material, softer (180/240) for natural nails, and a buffer for smoothing the surface.
  • E-file bits – a few basic ones: for cuticles, for removing product and for shaping.
  • Brushes – a gel brush for modelling and a thin brush for nail art.
  • Dust brush and a container for storing tools.

Hygiene: disinfection, sterilizer, disposables

If you will be providing services to clients, your workstation and tool care must comply with the Lithuanian hygiene standard HN 117:2007 "Health and safety requirements for beauty services". In practice, to start you will need:

  • hand and skin disinfectants;
  • instrument disinfectant solution and a disinfection tray;
  • a sterilizer and sterilisation pouches for metal tools;
  • disposables: gloves, files, wipes, wooden sticks.

Which type of sterilizer is suitable and how to carry out the whole cycle from cleaning to storage, we described in the article sterilisation of manicure tools. Requirements for premises and equipment are covered in the article nail salon room requirements.

Workspace: table, chair, lighting

Even if you are starting at home, plan a separate workspace that is easy to clean and ventilate. The main furniture and accessories:

  • Table – stable, with an easy-to-clean surface. Some manicure tables have a built-in dust extractor, so a separate unit is no longer needed.
  • Technician's chair with adjustable height – how your back feels after a long working day depends on it.
  • Lighting – a bright desk lamp with light close to daylight: it does not distort colours or cast shadows on the nail.
  • Arm rest for the client's hand and enough space for the lamp and e-file so the cables do not get in the way.

Starting budget: minimum, optimal, professional

Specific amounts depend on the models you choose, so instead of prices we give what is included at each level. Current prices can be seen on the product pages.

LevelSuitable forWhat is included
MinimumLearning and practiceHybrid lamp, basic e-file with several bits, prep liquids, base coat, top coat, 4–6 colours, one builder gel, forms, nippers, pusher, files, disinfectants
OptimalFirst clientsEverything from the minimum level, plus a dust collector, sterilizer, a more powerful lamp, a better-quality e-file, a wider choice of colours and gels, a work table and chair
ProfessionalA salon or full-time workProfessional e-file, table with built-in dust extractor, sterilisation equipment according to the services offered, several sets of bits for rotation, stock of the most frequently used materials

The biggest starting investment is equipment – the e-file, lamp, dust collector and sterilizer. Materials are cheaper, but they are a constant expense that is worth factoring into the price of your service.

What to buy later and what you don't need straight away

  • Nail art supplies – foils, powders, glitter, stickers. A few universal ones are enough to start; buy others according to clients' requests.
  • Dozens of colours – usually only a small share of shades is used most, so expand your palette gradually.
  • A second modelling system – acrylic or PolyGel, once you are working confidently with gel.
  • Large ready-made kits – convenient, but they often contain items you will not use. Before buying, check that the lamp and e-file meet your needs.
  • Additional equipment – a paraffin bath, heaters and similar devices – once you have clients who ask for them.

And one more tip: equipment lasts longer when it is looked after. If your e-file has started to vibrate or overheat, or your lamp no longer cures the product, the Nailshop.lt repair service offers free diagnostics of e-files, UV/LED lamps and dust collectors – of any manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need for nail extensions as a beginner?

A UV/LED lamp, an e-file, a dust collector, prep liquids, base coat and top coat, builder gel, forms or tips, basic tools and disinfectants. With this set you can do both gel polish and extensions.

How much does a nail technician's starter equipment cost?

It depends on whether you are just starting to learn or are working with clients straight away. The biggest part of the total is the e-file, lamp, dust collector and sterilizer; materials cost less, but they need to be replenished constantly.

Is it worth buying a ready-made nail extension kit?

A kit is convenient if the lamp and e-file in it meet your needs. It is often more useful to buy the core equipment separately and choose materials according to your chosen modelling system.

Which lamp and e-file should I buy first?

A hybrid UV/LED lamp that fits the whole hand, and an e-file with smoothly adjustable speed, a reverse function and a comfortable, non-vibrating handpiece. These two devices are used in almost every procedure.
