Cuticle nippers and blade alignment

The most important feature of cuticle nippers is the alignment of the blades. If the blades do not meet along their full length, the cuticle will be torn rather than cut. Nippers differ in blade length: 3–5 mm suits detailed work around the side walls, while 7 mm and above is better for removing the cuticle faster.

Pushers

A pusher is used to lift the cuticle away from the nail plate before cutting. One end is usually flat, for pushing back the cuticle, while the other is chisel-shaped, for removing pterygium from the nail surface. Push gently and without pressure, otherwise the nail matrix can be damaged.

Sterilisation

The standard sequence: mechanical cleaning, disinfectant solution, ultrasonic bath, sterilizer. Tools must be stored dry – in a damp environment even medical-grade steel will eventually rust at the joints.
