Nail Files

Nail files and buffing blocks – 39 products from €0.50. A nail file's grit is shown as a number, and it is worth understanding before you buy: the lower the number, the coarser the abrasive. 80–100 is for shaping and shortening artificial nails, 150–180 for levelling acrylic and gel, 180–240 suits natural nails, and 240 and finer is for the surface before polish and for buffing. You should never file natural nails with a coarse file – it tears the layers of the nail plate and the nail starts to split. Shape matters too: straight files suit square nails, while crescent (banana) files suit oval and almond shapes.

Grit numbers

80/80 and 100/100 – for shaping artificial nails. 150/150 – for levelling gel and acrylic. 180/240 – for natural nails and shaping the free edge. 240 and finer – for preparing the surface before application and for buffing. A double-sided file has a different grit on each side.

How to file correctly

File natural nails in one direction, from the edge towards the centre. Sawing back and forth creates heat and breaks down the layers of the nail plate, which makes the nail start to peel.

Hygiene

Paper files are single-use and should be replaced between clients. Metal and glass files withstand disinfection and sterilisation, so they work out cheaper in the long run.
