Crystals are measured on the SS scale: SS3–SS5 suit fine scattering, SS6–SS10 work as accents, and larger sizes are used as the main design feature. Stones are set into a layer of sticky gel or attached with special nail glue. To make a larger crystal last longer than a few days, add an extra drop of gel around it so that it holds the stone from the sides – top coat alone is not enough.

How to secure them so they don't fall off

The most common mistake is placing the crystal on top coat and simply sealing over it. Done this way, it lasts only a few days. The correct method: place the stone on uncured gel or a sticky base, cure it, then run a thin line of gel around its edge and cure again. It is best not to apply top coat over the top of the stone itself – it will dull the sparkle.

Sizes and composition

A design looks neater when at least two different sizes are used: one larger central stone and several small ones around it. A symmetrical layout on every nail makes the hand look visually heavy – decorating just one or two nails is usually enough.

Tools

A wax pencil or dotting tool is used to pick up the stones. For tiny details, tweezers with a curved tip are more comfortable.
