The correct sequence has four steps: mechanical removal of residue, soaking in a disinfectant solution, an ultrasonic bath to clean the joints, and only then the steriliser. If the first stages are skipped, sterilisation is ineffective – the heat cannot reach the surface beneath a layer of dirt. Four steps

1. Wipe away any visible residue. 2. Soak in the disinfectant solution for the stated time – it varies with the concentration. 3. An ultrasonic bath flushes out what a brush cannot reach, especially in the joints of nippers. 4. The steriliser destroys any remaining microorganisms.

Pouches with an indicator

The indicator on the pouch changes colour once the required temperature has been reached. It is the only simple way to check that the cycle actually took place, rather than the machine merely running.

What not to do

Disposable files, buffers and protective items do not need to be sterilised – they are replaced. Trying to reprocess them does not meet hygiene requirements.
