Repairing Your Nails After Gel Polish: What Actually Helps

Published 2026-08-06 · Updated 2026-11-04 · Nailshop.lt

If your nails are thin, white and breaking after removal, the polish itself is rarely to blame. More often it's over-aggressive filing or peeling the coating off. The good news: nails do recover. The bad news: only by growing out.

How long does it take

The nail plate grows about 3 mm a month, so a complete renewal from base to tip takes 4–6 months. No product will shorten that time – damaged layers don't repair themselves, they simply grow out.

That's why the aim of aftercare isn't to "heal" the nail, but to protect it from further damage while healthy nail grows in.

What actually helps

Cuticle oil

The most effective and cheapest product there is. Apply it daily, ideally several times a day. It doesn't rebuild the nail, but it keeps it flexible, so the nail bends instead of breaking. Dry nails are brittle, and that's the main cause of breakage.

Short length

Cut your nails short. The shorter the free edge, the less leverage and the lower the chance of breaking. It's not glamorous, but it works better than any product.

Strengthening products

Fibre-reinforced bases or strengthening polishes create a protective layer that physically stops the nail from flexing and peeling. It's a prosthetic, not a treatment – but that's exactly what you need while waiting for the nail to grow out.

Gloves for housework

Water and detergents dry out the nail, making it swell and contract. Wearing gloves when washing up noticeably reduces peeling.

What doesn't help

  • Taking calcium or gelatine – nails are made of keratin, not calcium. If your diet is balanced, supplements won't change the structure of your nails.
  • Buffing nails to a high shine – every buffing session removes another layer. For thin nails, that does harm.
  • "Restorative" serums promising results in a week – in a week a nail grows 0.7 mm. Nothing more can happen.

Do you need a break from polish

If your nails are healthy and the coating is removed correctly, it isn't necessary. If your nails are already damaged, a break of 2–4 weeks with daily oil and short length makes a noticeable difference.

When you return to polish, two things matter most: don't file the nail surface any harder than necessary to remove the shine, and never peel the coating off. How to remove it safely.

When to see a doctor

If the nail turns yellow or greenish, thickens, lifts from the nail bed or hurts, this is no longer a cosmetic problem. Fungal and bacterial infections can't be treated with anti-peeling products, so you need a dermatologist.
