Incorrect removal harms your nails more than the polish itself. A peeled-off coating takes the top layer of the nail with it, leaving the nail thinner – and it only recovers over several months, because the nail plate grows by roughly 3 mm a month.
What you will need
- Acetone-based remover
- Cotton pads or special remover pads
- Foil or reusable clips
- Buffer
- Wooden or plastic stick
- Cuticle oil
The process
1. Remove the shiny layer
Use a buffer to break through the top coat. This is the most important step: the top coat is a sealant, and as long as it is intact, the acetone simply cannot reach the colour. Many people complain that their "polish won't soak off" precisely because they skipped this step.
2. Apply the remover
Soak a cotton pad generously, place it on the nail and wrap it in foil. The pad must be wet – a half-dry one won't work.
3. Wait 10–15 minutes
Don't rush. Checking too early cools the nail and slows the process down. Warmth helps, which is why some people keep their hands under a towel.
4. Remove the coating
Once you take the foil off, immediately sweep away the softened coating with the stick – it should lift off without force. If you have to press, the coating has not softened yet: put the pad back on for another 5 minutes. Never scrape it off by force.
5. Finish up
Lightly buff any remaining residue, wash your hands and rub in some cuticle oil. Acetone is very drying, so oil isn't optional – it's essential.
Can you remove it with an e-file?
You can, but it takes skill. An e-file should remove only the coating, not the nail surface, and beginners find it hard to see the boundary between the two. The safest approach is to use the e-file to take off most of the coating and soak off the rest. About e-file bits.
Why peeling it off is so harmful
Gel polish bonds to the upper layers of the nail. When you peel it, the coating takes them with it – the nail becomes thin, sensitive and turns white. This is not cosmetic but structural damage: you can't treat it with products, you can only wait for the nail to grow out.
When to take a break
If your nails are getting thinner, breaking or hurting after polish, it is worth taking a break of 2–4 weeks and using restorative products in the meantime. For healthy nails, wearing polish all the time with correct removal does no harm.
