E-file faults: when the handpiece needs repair

Published 2026-10-04 · Updated 2026-11-04 · Nailshop.lt

A nail e-file most often needs repair when the handpiece starts to heat up, vibrate or hum, and the bit wobbles even when it is brand new. In most cases the culprits are worn bearings, a chuck clogged with dust, or a damaged cord. Before taking the e-file to a technician, it is worth running a few simple checks: some problems can be solved in a few minutes, and in other cases you will at least be able to describe the fault accurately. We also repair e-files ourselves – nail e-file and UV/LED lamp repair begins with a free diagnosis.

The most common e-file faults and their symptoms

How the e-file behaves tells you quite precisely where to look for the cause:

SymptomMost common causeWhat to check yourself
Handpiece heats up quicklyWorn bearings, dust in the chuck, too much pressureThe condition of the bit, whether it is fully inserted, the rpm you are working at
Vibrates, "knocks"Bent bit, loose chuck, bearingsTry it with a new bit
Hums, whines, squeaksBearings, dirt inside the handpieceWhether the noise can be heard without a bit too
Bit wobbles or does not lock inClogged or worn chuckClean the chuck, inspect the bit shank
Cuts out, stops when you move the cordBroken cord wire, loose connectorThe full length of the cord and the connector to the control box
Foot pedal or reverse not workingPedal switch, cord, mode switchWhether pedal mode is switched on at the control box
Does not switch on at allPower cord, control boxA different socket and the power cord

Handpiece heating up, vibrating or humming: what it means

When you work at high rpm for a long time, the handpiece warms up a little – that is normal. You should worry when it gets hot within a few minutes, becomes uncomfortable to hold, or heats up faster and faster. The most common causes:

  • Worn bearings. The bearings hold the shaft, so as they wear you get whistling or squeaking, more vibration and friction, and with them higher temperature. This is the most common handpiece repair.
  • The bit. A bent, blunt or dust-clogged bit spins unevenly and rubs instead of cutting. Read more in the article e-file bits: how to choose.
  • Working technique. Heavy pressure and rpm that are too high for the particular bit overload the motor. You will find recommended rpm in the guide how to use an e-file for nails.
  • Carbon brushes. The brushes in brushed (carbon-brush) motors wear down over time: the e-file loses power, cuts out and sometimes sparks. Brushless motors do not have this part.

The simplest test: insert a new, straight bit all the way in and run the e-file at medium rpm without load. If the vibration and noise remain, the problem is in the handpiece, not the bit.

Bit wobbles or will not lock in: a chuck problem

The bit is held in the handpiece by a spring-loaded chuck (the collet), which is tightened by turning the end of the handpiece. The standard nail e-file bit shank is 2.35 mm (3/32 in) in diameter, so bits with a different shank diameter do not fit. Gel and acrylic dust gradually packs into the chuck and it stops gripping the bit fully: the bit wobbles, knocks or is hard to pull out.

  • Change the bit only once the motor has come to a complete stop, and open and close the lock all the way.
  • Insert the bit right up to the stop. A bit inserted only halfway loosens the chuck and loads the bearings.
  • Do not use bits with a bent or scratched shank – they damage the chuck. You will find new ones in the e-file bits section.

If a cleaned chuck still does not grip a new bit, it is worn and needs replacing. This is done at a service centre.

Cord, pedal and control box faults

The cord most often breaks near the connectors, where it is constantly flexed. If the e-file cuts out or stops when you move the cord, the fault is almost always in the cord or connector. Do not wind the cord tightly around the handpiece and do not pull on it when unplugging.

The pedal. Many e-files have a switch between hand and foot control. If the pedal "does not work", first check that pedal mode is switched on and that its plug is fully inserted. Change the direction of rotation (FWD/REV) only after the motor has stopped: a sudden reverse at high speed loads the motor and bearings.

The control box. If the e-file does not switch on at all, try a different socket and power cord. Some boxes have overload protection: a loaded motor stops or the box shows an error. In that case reduce the pressure and rpm, and if it keeps happening, the e-file needs to be checked.

Electrical safety. Before cleaning or inspecting the e-file, unplug it from the socket. Do not take the control box apart – there is mains voltage inside. Do not use an e-file with cracked cord insulation, keep the box away from liquids and do not spray disinfectant directly onto it.

What you can do yourself: cleaning and care

  1. Switch off the e-file and unplug it from the socket.
  2. Remove the bit. Wipe the outside of the handpiece with a wipe dampened with surface disinfectant. Do not immerse the handpiece or rinse it under water.
  3. Open and close the lock a few times and clean the chuck opening with a dry brush so the dust falls out.
  4. Clean, disinfect and sterilise the bits separately from the handpiece.
  5. Inspect the cord along its full length: cracks, kinks or burnt spots mean the cord needs replacing.
  6. Work with a dust collector: the less dust in the air, the less gets into the handpiece. We explain how to choose one in the guide dust collector for manicures.
  7. Put the handpiece in its holder, not on the edge of the table: the bearings and shaft of a dropped handpiece are often damaged.

What not to do: lubricants, taking it apart, non-original parts

  • Do not lubricate the handpiece unless the manufacturer says to. Many nail e-file handpieces use sealed bearings. Oil that is dripped in mixes with dust into a paste that wears the bearings out even faster. Lubricate only when the instructions clearly say so, and only with the specified product.
  • Do not take the handpiece apart. The shaft, bearings and chuck are assembled with precision, so if it is reassembled incorrectly you get vibration that cannot be removed later. In addition, equipment that has been taken apart often loses its warranty.
  • Do not blow compressed air into the inside of the handpiece. Dust can be blown even deeper into the bearings.
  • Do not plug in a random handpiece. The handpiece connector, voltage and power must match the control box. An unsuitable handpiece may not work or may damage the box, so before buying a spare, check that it is compatible with your model.

Repair or a new e-file: how to decide

Bearings, chuck, cord, pedal and brushes wear out naturally, and replacing them is usually worthwhile, especially for professional e-files. Repairing cheap home-use models often costs almost as much as a new unit, and spare parts for them may not exist. Three questions will help you decide:

  • Before the fault, were you happy with the e-file's power and rpm?
  • How much will the repair cost compared with a new e-file of the same class?
  • Are original parts available for your model?

After the diagnosis we tell you whether repair is worthwhile. If not, in the nail e-files range you will find both professional and home-use models, and what to look out for when buying is described in the article how to choose an e-file for nails.

Nail e-file repair: how it works at our service centre

We repair e-files from any manufacturer, whether or not you bought them from us.

  1. Write or call. On the repair page fill in a request: give the model and as many symptoms as possible – when the fault appears, whether it is constant or only shows up under load.
  2. Hand in the e-file. Bring it to our shop in Vilnius, Žemaitės g. 22, or send it by courier from anywhere in Lithuania. Write to us before sending – we will send you the address and advise how to pack it safely. If possible, hand in the whole set: control box, handpiece and pedal. This makes it easier to find the fault.
  3. Free diagnosis. We identify the cause and tell you the repair price. We do not repair anything without your consent.
  4. Return. You collect the repaired e-file from the shop or we send it back by courier.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my e-file handpiece getting hot?

Most often because of worn bearings, dust in the chuck, a bit that is not fully inserted or is clogged, or too much pressure. If the handpiece heats up even with a new bit when running without load, it needs to be checked at a service centre.

Why does my e-file vibrate?

Vibration is usually caused by a bent bit, a loose chuck or worn bearings. First replace the bit with a new one: if the vibration disappears, the bit was to blame; if not, it is the handpiece.

Can I lubricate the e-file handpiece myself?

Only if the manufacturer's instructions say so. The bearings in most nail e-file handpieces are sealed, and oil that is dripped in damages them faster together with dust.

How much does e-file repair cost?

The price depends on the fault and the parts replaced, so we do not state it in advance. Diagnosis is free: once we have found the fault we tell you the price and start work only with your consent.
