Base and top coat may look like technical details, but they are what decide whether a manicure will last. The colour is just the layer sandwiched between them.
Base coat
A base coat does two jobs: it bonds to the nail and creates a surface for the colour to grip onto. Without one, gel polish will only last a few days.
Regular base
Thin and fluid, suitable for healthy, strong nails. Use it when the nail needs neither strengthening nor levelling.
Rubber base
Thicker and more flexible. It absorbs the nail's natural flex, so it suits bendy or thinner nails. It also lets you level the nail surface slightly and build a subtle curve. The most versatile option for most people.
Strengthening base
Even thicker, with fibres or strengthening additives. Designed for thin, peeling nails or ones that keep breaking. It can be used to build a noticeable apex and to extend the life of the manicure a little.
Top coat
A top coat protects the colour from wear and gives the final finish.
With a tacky layer
After curing, a sticky layer remains on the surface and has to be wiped off with a cleanser. These top coats usually give a deeper shine.
No-wipe
Nothing to wipe off, which is more convenient and quicker. A practical choice for home use.
Matte
Gives a velvety finish. Important: a matte top coat shows imperfections more, so the colour layer underneath has to be especially smooth.
Effect top coats
Glitter, shimmer, the "cat eye" effect. They change the look, but the protective function stays the same. Effect top coats.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a base and top coat from different brands?
Usually yes, but not always. The chemistry of different systems varies, and sometimes a top coat adheres poorly to another brand's base. If the coating starts to lift specifically between the colour and the top coat, that is the reason.
Can a base coat change the colour?
A rubber base often comes tinted (camouflage) and can be worn on its own for a natural-looking manicure. This is handy between bold colours.
Why does top coat turn yellow?
Most often because of sunlight or contact with household chemicals. Quality top coats contain UV filters that slow the process down, but do not eliminate it completely.
What to buy first
If you are just starting out, three things are enough: a rubber base, a no-wipe top coat and two colours. Get a strengthening base once you understand whether your nails need one. Gel polish kits.
